Healthy Weight Gain
The amount of weight you should gain during your pregnancy is based on how much you weighed before you became pregnant. If your pre-pregnancy weight was:
- Underweight: 28-40 pounds
- Normal: 25-35 pounds
- Overweight: 15-25 pounds
- Obese: 11-20 pounds
Even if you are overweight you should NOT try to lose weight during your pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or registered dietitian about how you can manage your pregnancy weight gain.
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. In pregnancy, the changing hormones and effects of a growing baby can result in you not being able to produce enough insulin. Up to 20% of women in Canada will have gestational diabetes.
It is important to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal before and during your pregnancy to have a healthy baby. Pregnancy will increase your body’s need for insulin, and you may need to change your diet to avoid high and low blood sugar levels.
You may have to change the medication you are taking during your pregnancy. Having proper blood sugar control during your pregnancy will help you have a happy healthy pregnancy and baby.
